How did you come to own the Lyn-Lake Barber Shop?
In 2000, I had heard a rumor that the owner since 1960 had intentions of retiring. I wanted to get back to the basics of barbering and create a shop that would be appealing to men, women and children and disrupt the mentality that barber shops are for old men. I wanted to construct a place that was fun, young and hip but was conscious of tradition and so it came to be that we were put in contact and made a deal over a handshake.

JaysonWhat are some of the defining characteristics of your clientele?
That is hard because of the diversity that exists amongst them. What is old is new again and what is new is young again.

With a forty year history behind the shop prior to your ownership, what became of the customers who expected a traditional barber shop? With your spunk, charisma and own established core of clients, did the shop allow for a forum both politically and personally amongst the populace?
The previous clients liked all the changes and we were able to retain about 80% of those who were able to embrace the growth. The former clients were eclectic to begin with because haircuts were beginning to be so expensive. People want a good haircut but they don't necessarily want to pay fifty dollars. That is what I like a lot about this shop is that it is accessible to everyone.

Do you adhere to the classic definition of a barbershop or do you extend yourself to meet more contemporary needs?
I would say that it is very traditional but it has my style and technique incorporated into it making it current, fun, hip and yet very comfortable.

How is it that you are able to integrate the needs of women?
My clientele is actually 50% women and 50% men. We don't look like a salon but we can style like one.

Are you content with your current endeavors or do you have intentions of expanding upon the life of the quiet barber shop owner?
Eventually a larger space might be nice but right now I want to focus on keeping the shop strong and continue to seek out productive avenues of growth.
